LQuin belongs to a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones. It works by combating bacteria within the body. LQuin is prescribed for bacterial infections affecting the skin, sinuses, kidneys, bladder, or prostate. Additionally, it is utilized to treat bacterial infections responsible for bronchitis or pneumonia, and for individuals exposed to anthrax. LQuin may also be used for indications not mentioned in this medication guide.
You should refrain from using LQuin if you have a history of myasthenia gravis or if you are allergic to levofloxacin or similar antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin, gemifloxacin, moxifloxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, among others.
Before starting LQuin, inform your doctor if you suffer from kidney or liver issues, muscle weakness or breathing difficulties, joint problems, seizures, diabetes, low potassium levels in your blood, a personal or family history of Long QT syndrome, or if you’ve ever had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic.
Avoid taking antacids, vitamin or mineral supplements, sucralfate, or didanosine powder or chewable tablets within 2 hours before or after administering LQuin. Levofloxacin may lead to tendon swelling or tearing, particularly of the Achilles' tendon in the heel. The risk of these side effects is higher if you are over 60, taking steroid medication, or have undergone a kidney, heart, or lung transplant. Discontinue LQuin and contact your doctor immediately if you experience sudden pain, swelling, tenderness, stiffness, or mobility issues in any of your joints. Rest the affected joint until you receive medical attention or further instructions.
The most commonly reported side effects include nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and constipation. Less frequent side effects may consist of difficulty sleeping, dizziness, rash, flatulence, abdominal pain, and itching. LQuin should be administered with caution in patients with central nervous system disorders. Allergic reactions such as hives and anaphylaxis are also possible.
